On July 3rd, 2025, Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva died in a car crash in Zamora, Spain, as the player was on his way to return to Liverpool for pre-season.
The 28-year-old was driving to the ferry port at Santander to return to England after having been advised not to travel by air due to surgery on his lung earlier in the summer. He had recently married Rute Cardoso, his childhood sweetheart and mother to his three children, in a ceremony in Porto.
The car he was driving in left the road after its tire blew out, coming to rest in the ditch and catching on fire. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Beyond being one of the most likeable players in the Liverpool squad and widely admired around the football world, the undersized striker will be remembered for his technique on the ball, his work-rate off it, and for being the best finisher the club had seen in many years.
He’s a lad from Portugal
Better than Figo, don’t you know?
Ohhh, his name is Diogo
