Rest in peace, Diogo. You’ll never walk alone.

There’s tragic and shocking breaking news today as Spanish state-owned TV station TVE, citing local firefighters, reports that Liverpool FC’s 28-year-old forward Diogo Jota has died.

According to Marca in a report confirming the devastating incident, Jota and his brother Andre, also a professional footballer, both died after the vehicle they were travelling in came off the road in the province of Zamora in northwestern Spain during the early hours of Thursday morning.

In a social media post just days earlier, Diogo announced that he had gotten married to his partner Rute Cardoso on 22 June 2025. The couple had three children and three beagles.

Since joining Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 in a £41M transfer, Jota scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the Reds, etching his name into Anfield’s history books with his pressing ability, clutch goalscoring and ability to leap amongst the giants. Liverpool’s number 20 won the Premier League title last season, the club’s 20th domestic league title. Jota also lifted the FA Cup, Community Shield, and the Carabao Cup twice with the Reds.

Thank you for everything, Diogo. Our condolences go out to Jota’s family. You’ll never walk alone.
