Nigeria’s women’s rugby league national team, the Green Falcons, capped off their friendly series against Ghana’s Leopardess with another dominant win, defeating their West African rivals 24–8 on Saturday at the Alaro City International Rugby Pitch in Lekki, Lagos.
The victory completed a clean sweep for Nigeria, following their 40–0 victory in the opening fixture on Tuesday.
After being humbled in the first match, Ghana showed improved resilience in the second leg, managing to hold their own for large portions of the game.
Nigeria, however, struck early, racing into a 12–2 halftime lead thanks to two quick tries.
The Ghanaians found some rhythm in the second half, narrowing the scoreline to 16–8, but their momentum was cut short when Faustina Akeje crossed the line for Nigeria’s third try, extending the Falcons’ lead to 20 points.
Nigeria later added another try to seal the 24–8 win and comprehensive double over their regional rivals.
Tactical Test Before Canada
General Manager of the Nigeria Rugby League Association (NRLA), Isah Lawal, said the friendlies were crucial in refining the team’s structure ahead of their participation in the inaugural Rugby League World Series later this month in Canada.
“We wanted to make this game more structured and more constructed, and them being able to score this time, we don’t see it as a negative,” Lawal explained.
“Now we know the areas to tighten up and make sure we are sharp at the tournament.”
Chairman of the NRLA, Abiodun Cole, is also optimistic about the Green Falcons’ performance on the world stage, praising the team’s preparation and backing from stakeholders.
“We also have a lot of support from ex-players who are home and abroad,” Cole said.
“The team’s strategy involves combining local players with those based abroad to create a formidable squad.”
“With faith in their abilities and God’s guidance, the team is looking forward to putting up a good show in Canada.”
Eyes on 2026 World Cup Qualification
The friendly series provided the Falcons with an opportunity to fine-tune tactics and team chemistry before heading to Canada for the Rugby League World Series, where Nigeria will compete against Ireland, Fiji, and hosts Canada.
The tournament will determine the final qualification spot for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
